Freifunk is often considered slow, but it doesn't have to be this way. This presentation contemplates another encrypted tunneling implementation to remove the overhead inducted by using FastD. To accomplish a relevant throughput improvement the encryption and Layer 2 tunneling is moved from Userspace to Kernelspace. In an overview Wireguard with GRE is compared to FastD in terms of performance as well as setup and maintanance cost.
