As hegemonic and intersectionally discriminatory institutions, universities re-produce global structures of domination and oppression. And regularly, insights from activism inspire academia rather than vice versa. Still, research is a relevant module to understand and meaningfully participate in the world around us. But the line between research and activism becomes blurred anyway. Activists are researchers and researchers are activists, participating in both worlds, oftentimes trying to bring them together. Here, long-term research projects that illuminate specific processes in-depth tend to collide with the rather short-term struggles of activism that need immediate responses to current issues. Therefore, we want to elaborate with you: (How) Can academic research and activism in SAR interact in solidarity?
In our own roles as researchers and activists, we appreciate both forms of working and knowledge-producing and are well aware of challenges and difficulties. Together with you, we want to discuss all these challenges and difficulties - but also work out and underline potentials!
We organized a workshop like this already at the SAR-Camp in September in Biesenthal. We invite people to newly join in and to follow-up. If you like to, bring some snacks or your breakfast, lunch, dinner, ... The format is meant to be low-key and comfortable!

In dieser Session werde ich den OpenStreetMap-Editor JOSM vorgestellen, eine Java-Applikation für das fortgeschrittene Bearbeiten von OpenStreetMap-Daten. Anders als der Online-Editor iD sind auch größere Datenmengen und Relationen mit JOSM bearbeitbar.
Der Workshop richtet sich an Leute, die schon einmal zu OpenStreetMap beigetragen haben und Relationen und größere Objekte (z.B. Landnutzungsflächen) bearbeiten möchten.

Fünf Stromerzeuger dominieren den deutschen Strommarkt. Zusätzlich sitzt mit Katherina Reiche eine Person an der Spitze des Wirschafts- und Energieministeriums, die vier Jahre lang eine Führungsposition innerhalb des Energiekonzerns E.ON innehatte. Zwar gibt es Energiegenossenschaften und Balkonkraftwerkbesitzer*innen, die versuchen, sich von diesen Machtstrukturen ein Stück weit unabhängig zu machen, aber sie produzieren nur einen Bruchteil der Energie, die tagtäglich nachgefragt wird. Die Kampagne RWE und co enteignen setzt sich deswegen für einen Strommarkt ein, der nicht länger von Profitinteressen getrieben wird, und arbeitet an einem Plan, wie dies durch Vergesellschaftung umgesetzt werden kann.

StreetComplete [1] stellt kleine, vor Ort schnell lösbare Aufgaben, und hilft, fehlende Informationen zu OpenStreetMap beizutragen und die Karte aktuell zu halten. Im Workshop werde ich zeigen, wie man mit StreetComplete zu OpenStreetMap beitragen kann, und Erfahrungen aus der Nutzung teilen.
Für den Workshop sind keine Vorkenntnisse zu OpenStreetMap erforderlich. Zum Bearbeiten der Datenbank/Karte ist ein OpenStreetMap-Account erforderlich, in der App ist ein Account allerdings erst zum Upload von Änderungen erforderlich.

OpenStreetMap is not a project but rather a movement with small core and many different applications and libraries to us the data. In this Ask Us Anything session, you can ask all the questions about OpenStreetMap data usage as a software developer.
What if local communities operated their own data centres? How might that look and function? To what extent would it be democratic and sustainable? Who would (not) benefit from it?
In this workshop, we would like to think through, examine and discuss alternative models for the ownership and management of collective data centres. We will take a structured look at fundamental concepts, governance issues and implications, as well as discuss parallel ideas in other areas (cooperative banks or housing, community-supported agriculture) in the hope of initiating a broad discussion about alternatives to the profit and exploitation logic of the current data centre industry. Similar approaches to data centers that already exist include Nubo (Belgium), Espora (Mexico) and Wobcom (Germany).

Unser Vortrag beleuchtet diese Frage anhand einer sozialwissenschaftlichen Analyse von Reddit-Diskussionen, in denen Softwareentwickler:innen offen über ihre Erfahrungen mit generativer KI im Arbeitsalltag sprechen. Wir zeigen aus unseren Erhebungen: Generative KI wird nicht nur als Code-Assistent, sondern zunehmend als strukturierende Instanz genutzt; eine selbstgewählte Feedbackinstanz, die auf der einen Seite Autonomie verspricht und andererseits zugleich neue Abhängigkeiten schafft. In unserem Workshop wollen wir gemeinsam darüber sprechen, was diese Gegensätze für uns in der Praxis bedeuten.

As members of the Switzerland Chapter of the Internet Society we would like to bring together activists, NGOs, and businesses who strive to make our communities, states, and supranational institutions truly digitally sovereign, i.e.: As (collaborative but independent) actors connected by distributed networks powered by free software enabling the free exchange of information over open data formats.
Given that those who dislike this vision have deep pockets, excellent contacts to politicians, and marketing teams who try to give "digital sovereignty" a very different meaning from how we understand it ("buy European"), we as a community should
a) network to get to know the other actors who are working on this topic and be more effective together,
b) understand what is going on elsewhere in Europe, and
c) exchange news, ideas, challenges, successes and failures in influencing policy so that other activists can learn from them.

Computer programs run with all privileges of the running user. If your user can read your emails, then so can any other program you run. However, many programs do not need most permissions and perhaps should not have them at all.
This workshop demonstrates quite simple ways in which software can self-restrict itself. The focus will not be on foreign, potentially malicious software, but on hardening programs against misconduct and future security vulnerabilities.
Several operating systems have developed different interfaces that restrict software beyond its normal scope. This workshop will focus on POSIX and especially OpenBSD because of its user-friendly APIs. Although other operating systems, such as Linux, will be discussed, they will not be covered in depth due to their more complicated APIs.
Within the workshop part, software with known security vulnerabilities is then patched together - usually with almost a single line. Ideally, an exploit has hardly any effect afterwards, although the vulnerability is still present. This is not intended to encourage carelessness, but rather to demonstrate the development of a further safety net for software.
A basic understanding of programming is required and, more importantly, an interest in the topic. You will need to bring an SSH client, for example a laptop with (almost) any operating system.
The language will be either English or German, depending on who shows up.
